Memorial Day Tradition: Honoring Our Veterans Through Community Service

Every Memorial Day weekend, something special happens throughout Morristown. Residents wake up to find American flags proudly displayed in front of their homes – nearly 5,000 flags placed throughout the community by The Bruen Team.
This tradition started decades ago with my grandfather, Carlton Bruen, a World War II Purple Heart recipient who founded our family real estate business around 1955. What began as a small neighborhood gesture in Burnham Park, where I grew up, has grown into a community-wide tribute that touches nearly every corner of Morristown.
My grandfather's military service shaped more than just his character – it influenced how he approached business and community involvement. Growing up, I watched him demonstrate that successful local businesses should give back to their communities in meaningful ways. It wasn't just about networking and advertising; it was about making a positive impact.
Today, when Memorial Day week arrives and I look at all those flags waiting to be placed, I'll admit I sometimes wonder what I've committed myself to! But the tradition means everything to our family and our community. It's a way to use our marketing efforts and resources to do something genuinely positive – honoring the veterans we've lost while bringing our neighborhoods together.
In an era where business has become increasingly digital and automated, this hands-on, in-person tradition reminds us of the importance of real community connection. Yes, it's marketing, but it's marketing with heart and purpose. It's about being part of the fabric of Morristown, not just selling houses here.
When local business people were more community-focused in my grandfather's era, they understood something we sometimes forget today: true success comes from serving something bigger than yourself. Whether it's placing flags for Memorial Day or helping families find their perfect home, the best business happens when you're genuinely invested in your community's wellbeing.
As we honor our fallen veterans this Memorial Day, I'm proud to continue this family tradition that connects our past, present, and future in Morristown.
